Fontainhas is one of Goa’s most distinctive cultural gems, celebrated for its vibrance, beauty, and enduring connection to the region’s Portuguese past. This historic Latin Quarter offers a rare glimpse into a way of life shaped by centuries of cultural exchange.
The name Fontainhas is believed to be derived from Fonte Phoenix (Fountain of Phoenix), a water reservoir constructed nearby during Portuguese rule. Established in the late 18th century, the area was founded by António João de Sequeira, a wealthy Goan expatriate who had made his fortune in Mozambique.
Historically, Fontainhas reflected a subtle social divide. Wealthier families lived in large bungalows along the hill, while artisans, musicians, and traders occupied the denser lower quarters forming what is today the heart of Fontainhas and its unmistakable charm.
Architecture & Character
Fontainhas is defined by its Indo-Portuguese architecture pastel-coloured houses with tiled roofs, arched windows, ornate balconies, and inner courtyards. Many homes still display traditional azulejos (hand-painted ceramic tiles) and decorative ironwork.
Located near Altinho Hill in Panjim, Goa’s capital, the neighbourhood’s narrow, winding lanes resemble those of old European towns. Declared a heritage zone, Fontainhas has been carefully preserved and remains a living neighbourhood rather than an open-air museum.
